Focus of Christmas

Before anything else, let me greet you with "A blessed, meaningful and merry Christmas!".

I don't know about you, but for me, Christmas is the best season ever! Here in my country, the Philippines, the celebration of this marvelous season starts in September. This is the time when the morning breeze gets colder, signalling that the "spirit" of Christmas is all around.

More often than not, every year actually, we lose sight of the real focus of Christmas. 

I'm sure you've heard the familiar Christmas rhyming cliche. I'm not gonna mention it here because you already know that and because it'd be another cliche to even mention a word of it. It would be redundant.

I'll try to keep this as short as possible. Here's my first point:

Christmas is for you.

You read that right folks. Christmas is for you. Luke 2:11 NJKV says, "For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord."

Christ was born to you. To save you. To save you from your sins. That is why He is the Savior. Jesus was born to save you from your sins because sin is our primary problem.

If our primary problem is money, then, God would've sent a banker. If our primary problem is poverty, then God would've sent us an economist.

God sent us a Savior because we need saving. We need salvation.

Christmas is about God reaching out to man by sending His only Son to seek and save the lost.

Here's my next point:

The focus of Christmas is JESUS and we respond by worshiping Him for who He is and for what he has done.

Christmas maybe for you, but Christmas is not about you. A lot of people think that Christmas is about the food, the gifts, the parties, about what they will get. People think that Christmas is about Santa Claus, or about the carols to sing or about the tallest and the brightest Christmas trees.

But no. Christmas is about Jesus. It's all about Him. When we make Christmas all about ourselves, we are missing the point of celebrating this wondrous and miraculous event.

The appropriate response then is worship. Worship Jesus because He is the Lord and because He saved us from our sins.

I hope that what I've shared to you will help you understand the focus of this season's celebration. Again, have a blessed, meaningful and merry Christmas! :D

Trip to the Christmas Capital of The Philippines



Quick post. 

Later this morning, I and my friends will head out to the Christmas Capital of the Philippines, none other than the City of San Fernando, Pampanga for the Giant Lantern Festival 2012.

It was back in 2007 when I last went to San Fernando to see the ~20-feet tall lanterns made up of thousands of light bulbs operated manually by a rotating drum.

It's exciting because I get to return to the province where our family came from. Yep. I'm Kapampangan (That's someone from the province of Pampanga for thsoe who doesn't know Filipino). I may not speak the dialect fluently, but embracing the culture my family was involved in somehow gives me great pleasure.

We'll leave by 9AM later and we expect to get there at around 10:30AM. I'll be posting pictures so watch out.

I'm finishing up some tasks and will go to sleep in a bit. Until next post! :D

Genesis 8:7-12

Nation, let us all continue to pray for our fellow countrymen suffering due to the incessant, torrential rains.

Instead of helping spread relief, there are some people hiding behind their usernames and keyboards eager to spread fear.

I got so irritated when I read this tweet:

Someone who is masquerading as "God Almighty" and whose Twitter handle is "@Godstagram" insinuated and implied a coincidence between today's date, with the widespread flooding, with Noah and the Great Flood. Genesis 8:7-12 was trending worldwide, BTW.

The problem is, "@Godstagram" misquoted Scripture. If you're really God, who is omniscient (knows all things), there is absolutely no way You could misquote the Bible. It's Your Word for everyone's sake! How could God forget His words?

BTW, Genesis 8:7-12 is about Noah, sending a raven and a dove to see if the waters have started to recede. I know this because I am a Sunday School teacher. I taught this in my classes several times. If you don't believe me, grab a Bible. look it up. I know you have one in your house and it's just accumulating dust. 

Yep. Filipino households have at least two Bibles in their homes. gathering dust and becoming dwelling places for arachnids. Sad, sad truth.

Anyway, to those spreading the and dwelling on the coincidence of Genesis 8:7-12 with today's date, clearly you never read your Bible.

This is what should be trending, that God remembered Noah and everyone with him in the ark and He sent a wind over the earth and the 'flood' receded.

Genesis 8:1-3 says "But God remembered Noah and all the wild animals and the livestock that were with him in the ark, and he sent a wind over the earth, and the waters receded. 2 Now the springs of the deep and the floodgates of the heavens had been closed, and the rain had stopped falling from the sky. 3 The water receded steadily from the earth..."


In Genesis 9:12-16, God made a covenant with Noah that He will never again, destroy all life with a food.

12 And God said, "This is the sign of the covenant I am making between me and you and every living creature with you, a covenant for all generations to come: 13 I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth. 14 Whenever I bring clouds over the earth and the rainbow appears in the clouds, 15 I will remember my covenant between me and you and all living creatures of every kind. Never again will the waters become a flood to destroy all life. 16 Whenever the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and all living creatures of every kind on the earth."

So please, stop being shortsighted. As Philippians 4:8 says, "Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable — if anything is excellent or praiseworthy — think about such things."

Instilling fear in the hearts of our fellow Filipinos and quoting Scripture out of context is a big no-no! Let's think of things that will encourage one another.

My apologies if I sound like a self-righteous bastard. I just have to post this because spreading these twisted truths blinds other people who are ignorant of the truth. It strikes a nerve when people commit these grave acts of deception and blatant "brainwashing".

Let me be clear, I'm a humble sinner just like everyone else. I'm not saying I'm better than you are.

Now's not the time to be afraid. There re 365 ("Fear not..")s in the Bible. One for each day of the year. 
Now's the time to PUSH. Pray until something happens.

1) I never really saw you. I usually am more focused on going where I need to be. (I am also a fast walker)

My 21st Birthday at the Great Northern Sale


Yesterday, I celebrated my 21st birthday. Yeah, I know. I'm old and I told my self what better way to celebrate my coming of age than to shop at the biggest sale of the year? Yep. I celebrated my birthday at the Great Northern Sale at SM City North EDSA.

My avid readers would of the remember to arrive early at the Great Northern Sale because I advised them in my previous post.


I left the house at around 10:30 AM because I wast still online thanking my friends and family for greeting me on my birthday. I took the MRT (train) because it's much faster than the bus but as usual, the MRT's crowded.


I immediately went to the Admin Office of SM North EDSA to claim the GC they have for me :D

After claiming my GC, I then headed to the Department Store to do my shopping.

This is what it looked like inside SM North EDSA's Department Store. Thousands of people scrambling to take home their great finds. 



Yes, there were major discounts everywhere you look. Clothes, bags, shoes, accessories, things you use at home. Marked down items were everywhere!





I needed dress shirts (long-sleeved, short-sleeved and three-fourths) to add to my wardrobe and for work (I don't mean office work) and events so I made my way to the Men's Department. Piles and piles of shirts were on the display table. Hundreds were also hung on racks. That was just euphoric :D


I didn't bring a lot of cash. I'm officially unemployed starting yesterday, so you know why. There were a lot of nice shirts but I need to pick the perfect articles of clothing. Pair that with my OCD and you've got yourself a persnickety 21-year old.

This gray-accented navy blue three-fourths from Dansen is just perfect for casual/formal wear. I can wear this with jeans on a normal day or pair it with black pants for a church service on Sundays. I got this, paying half of its original price.

I studied in a school which required its students to to come to class in corporate attire. This is maybe where my penchant for formal/business outfits came from.

Long-sleeved shirts of Wall Street's New York Collection usually sells for more than 1000 pesos (about 25 US dollars). This one sells for exactly that.

However, because of the Great Northern Sale, I got this white-striped purple long-sleeved shirt for almost half of its regular selling price.

Seriously! Wall Street's New York Collection for almost half the price! Nothing beats the discounts at the Great Northern Sale!

 
After shopping, I bought 12 pieces of brownies from Brownies Unlimited for only 99 PhP which normally sells for 125 PhP. This too, is in connection with the Great Northern Sale.


There was a fashion show later that night at The Block, SM North EDSA, but because I have a meeting with JIVE Youth Leaders that same night, I wasn't able to watch.

Friday The 13th

I am so sure you've all seen the 1980 movie "Friday The 13th" (And others with the similar title). You know just how horrifying that movie is. What if it happens in real life? I hope not...

Friday the 13th is a date considered unlucky, or "malas" in Filipino, by a lot of people. people consider the number 13 as unlucky that is why it is almost never present, non-existent even, in hotels, office buildings and other establishments.


But you know what? They're just fooling themselves. The 13th floor they mark as 14th? It's still the 13th floor! The joke's on them XD

Pair with Friday, which is the most unlucky day of the week according to superstitions, and you've got yourself a day full of disaster. well, that's according to them.

The truth is, it's just a day that place, when the first day of every month falls on a Sunday.

Yep. You read that right. Every month that starts on a Sunday is bound to have  Friday the 13th (e.g., January 1 = Sunday, January 13 = Friday).

This year alone has 3 occurrences of Friday the 13th. January 13, April 13 and July 13.



Had it not been a leap year, the only months that will have Friday the 13th on them are the months of January and October.


Now, what is with this weird fascination with the"unluckiness" of Friday the 13th?  

The truth? It's an absolute superstition!

In Italy, 13 is a very lucky number. What's unlucky for them is Friday the 17th!


In Spanish-speaking countries, Tuesday the 13th is considered unlucky.

The earliest known documented reference of Friday the 13th in English occurs in Henry Sutherland Edwards' 1869 biography of Gioachino Rossini, who died on a Friday 13th.

Another fact, driving on Friday the 13th is safer, well, at least in the Netherlands (according to a study), simply because people don't get out as much in fear of getting themselves into an accident.
 
Friday the 13ths are inevitable. The 13th of the month is more likely to fall on a Friday than any other day of the week as shown by this diagram:

Bottom line: 

Friday the 13th is here to stay, no matter what you say. 

For the superstitious: I know. It's tough. You're screwed. Deal with it! XD

You’re my big sister, and yes, you’re older than I am XD

To all my teachers, professors and mentors, I say thank you so much for molding me and for teaching me invaluable lessons (in and outside the classroom, academic and otherwise) throughout the years. You were a large part of making me who I am right now. I owe you a lot.

To my other relatives, friends, colleagues, mentees, and other people whom I’ve met, thank you for being with me in triumph and defeat, in rejoicing and mourning; for working with me; putting up with me; for not conspiring, er, plotting to murder me XD; but most of all, for simply being a part of my life.

To my enemies, detractors, disparagers and haters, you can all go to you know where XD er, thank you for making my life challenging. If you want your kitchen knives back which you left in my back, I’ll just mail to you :D Now, my life wouldn’t be fun without you guys, would it? :D

I may not be around for long… This is why I want to appreciate everyone who had been a part of my 21 years that I lived in this world (even if you just passed by). Again, thank you so much!

Mega Job Fair and Discount Caravan At Makati City Hall Quadrangle

If you're unemployed (like me XD) or just bored (again,  like me XD), I encourage you to come to the Makati City Mega Job Fair and Discount Caravan at the Makati City Hall Quadrangle today, Thursday, 
July 12, 2012 8AM - 5PM

This is through Makati City government's Public Employment Service Office (PESO). This is also in conjunction with Makati City Mayor Jejomar Erwin C. Binay.

Mayor Binay, who's turning 35 today, called on jobseekers and entrepreneurs to participate in the twin events, themed “Trabaho at Abot-Kayang Bilihin Handog ni Mayor Jun Binay”.  

Over 60 companies and business establishments will be accepting applications and conducting interviews, while others will sell products for up to 50 percent discount or at factory prices.

“We encourage the unemployed residents of Makati and its neighboring localities to come to the job fair this Thursday and get the chance to work with one of the reputable companies, institutions and manpower agencies that are in search of competent and reliable workers,” Binay said.

The discount caravan is in collaboration with the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI). Over 30 companies and manufacturers will sell their products at affordable rates, giving 5 to 50 percent discounts or factory price.

The Technical Education Skills Development Authority (TESDA) will also be sending its trainees to offer free haircut, massage and other services, while the Bureau of Plant Industry will be giving away free fruit-bearing and ornamental plant seedlings.

Dolphy, Philippines' King Of Comedy Passes Away...


Rodolfo "Dolphy" Quizon, Sr., widely regarded as "Philippines' King Of Comedy" passed away today, July 10, at 8:40PM.

83-year old Comedy King Dolphy passed away after  long battle with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and recurring pneumonia.

Dolphy was rushed to Makati Medical Center and was confined in the hospital's ICU (Intensive Care Unit) last June 9 after complaints of difficulty of breathing and shortness of breath.

Dolphy underwent several blood transfusions and dialysis sessions since hospitalized. Complications caused by pneumonia also arose.

Dolphy would have celebrated his 84th birthday on July 25. His last film was Father Jejemon in which he played the role of a priest.

Mang Dolphy captured the hearts of Filipinos and made millions and millions laugh during his career.

Dolphy's notable roles in TV series such as John en Marsha, Home Along da Riles (Home along the Train Tracks), Home Along Da Riber (Home long the River), Home Along Da Airport (Home Along the Airport and films such as Markova: Comfort Gay, Facifica Falayfay, Tataynic (A parody of Titanic), Aringkingking, Da Best in da West 2: Da Western Pulis Stori (The Best In The West 2: The Western Police Story) and a lot more made him one of the most beloved Filipino actors of all time.

Dolphy, thank you so much for making me, and millions of Filipinos laugh. It helped us push through a lot of hardships and problems...
Farewell... We'll forever miss you... In pace requiscat...

 A Message from Our Founder

As an institution which strongly believes in holistic learning, Academy Of Rock (AOR) provides a conducive environment for students to build and develop their character, inspire creativity and forge lasting relationships through the process of learning.

In the 5 years that we have been in operation, AOR’s successes and achievements have exceeded all expectations. In 2011, we were awarded the Promising SME 500 2012 from Small Medium Business Association (SMBA), Singapore. We distinguish ourselves from many other music institutions by ensuring that our teachers are internationally certified to conduct music lessons. It is part of AOR’s culture to expose students to a diverse range of musical experiences as such our students are given opportunities to perform at world-class art venues locally as well as abroad.

It was a dream  come true when we launched our very own retail department with the AOR MUSIC STORE which will market our very own AOR range of instruments. These range of instruments have been carefully selected to cater to the beginners and their quality in construction and finish will prove to be the instrument of choice for any new music prodigy.

AOR possesses a proprietary teaching syllabus called “The AOR Syllabus” which provides all our teachers the proper guidance and materials to conduct music classes for all levels - beginners to advanced.

THE AOR EDUCATOR

Meet the "World's Youngest Distinction Holder for Diploma in Music Performance from Rockschool UK"!

THERON obtained his Diploma in 2010 and exceeded that achievement the following year with his Licentiate in Music Performance from Rockschool UK. The seasoned performer has shared the stage with many well-known drum stars and looks forward to further his passion Bass guitar where he has achieved his Grade 8.

OUR STAR BAND

THE AOR BAND
The AOR Band is the premier student band from Academy Of Rock comprising of talented youths hand-picked from the music school. They started out in 2009 performing for a charity show when the performance bug hit them and they have taken their talents to the stage at world-class arts venues such as The Esplanade and even overseas to Hong Kong Disneyland. For this chapter of their constantly evolving line-up, we have five young souls who are passionate about music as much as getting up on stage and rocking it out.

OUR EVENTS
The AOR event and production team has successfully organized bi-yearly full-scale concerts for our students since 2007. We have seen guest artists as well as students from schools as far as Canada share the stage with our students. This has lead to invitations for our students to perform in Hong Kong Disneyland as well as Singapore’s premier arts venue, The Esplanade.

Design Concept
The deliberate play on AOR’s corporate colours of Orange, Deep Red and Yellow create a warm and lively tone, producing an atmosphere conducive for learning and exploring one’s musical creativity. Decals of iconic lyrics are clearly displayed to inspire one to achieve greatness in song and individuality. One will also find studios comfortably sized to meet every student’s learning demands with state of the art instruments and equipment for students of any background. The heavy use of professional instruments and technology will also be extensively incorporated into the school to leverage on the latest available applications.
